A "checkout" is how you take your remaining score down to exactly zero, finishing on a double (or the bullseye, which counts as double 25). Once you're inside 170 you're on a three-dart finish — and knowing the standard route stops you leaving yourself an awkward double. Below is a complete chart. The notation is simple: T = treble, D = double, Bull = the 50. So T20 T20 Bull means treble 20, treble 20, bullseye.
170 is the highest possible finish (T20, T20, Bull). Seven scores between 2 and 170 have
no three-dart finish at all — the "bogey numbers":
169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. On those you deliberately score to leave a checkable number.
The big finishes worth memorising
170 · T20 T20 Bull
The "big fish" — the maximum checkout.
167 · T20 T19 Bull
Highest finish that isn't all 20s.
100 · T20 D20
The bread-and-butter two-dart finish.
40 · D20
"Double top" — the double every player wants to be left on.
32 · D16
The favourite: miss inside and you're left on D8, then D4 — the "safe" doubles.
2 · D1
The "madhouse" — the smallest, most nerve-jangling finish.

How to think about checkouts
Leave yourself a "good" double
The best players aim to finish on even doubles they can walk down — D20, D16, D8, D4. The logic: if you miss D16 narrowly and hit a single 16, you're left with 16 → D8, then D4. Miss an odd double like D15 and you're left on 15, which needs a fiddly single first. Given a choice, steer toward the even corridor.
The chart is a guide, not gospel
Several scores have more than one perfectly good route. 80 can be T20 then D10, or T16 then D16 — many players prefer the second because it leaves the popular D16. 132 is T20, T16, D12 for some and T20, T20, D6 for others. Pick the doubles you hit most.
Set up the double you like
If you're on an odd number like 57, don't just chip away — throw a single 17 first to leave 40 (double top). The point is to plan the double you want to arrive on, rather than react to whatever's left. Good scoring is about setting up a double you trust.
